Rescue workers freed seven illegal immigrants who became trapped after attempting to enter the United States from Mexico via a flooded storm drain, US media reported.

CNN and local television in Otay Mesa, near San Diego in southern California, reported that the immigrants were freed after becoming stuck in the drain.

Earlier, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack, said border patrol units had been alerted after hearing yelling from the trapped immigrants.

Mack said there had been an increase in immigrants attempting to tunnel into the United States since the September 11, 2001 attacks, which led to tighter border controls.

"It's definitely been on the increase since 9/11," Mack told CNN, adding that drainage systems were often targeted by immigrants who dug "small, primitive gopher holes" on the Mexican side of the border.

"It's a very dangerous situation," Mack said. "It's probably a miracle that nobody has been stuck yet. It's dangerous. It's a very small, enclosed area."
