Fewer workers in New York are confident about their employer’s future and they believe the economy is getting weaker, a Harris Interactive Inc. report for Spherion Corp. shows. The New York Employment Report shows employee confidence fell slightly in August to 51.9 from 53.2 in July and 59.9 a year ago. The index measures adult workers’ confidence in their personal employment situation and the macroeconomic environment. Some 49 percent of workers statewide believe the economy is getting weaker, up from 41 percent in July. Twelve percent believe the economy is getting stronger, compared with 14 percent in July.
Sixteen percent of respondents said there were more jobs available last month, down slightly from 17 percent in July, while 40 percent said fewer jobs were available, down from 44 percent the previous month. Workers’ confidence in the future of their employers also fell in August to 51 percent from 59 percent in July. Some 17 percent were not confident in the future of their employers, up from 16 percent in July. Some 13 percent of workers statewide thought it was likely they would lose their jobs, up from 9 percent in July, while 80 percent said it was unlikely, down slightly from 81 percent in July. New York lags the nation in terms of worker confidence in the economy. In August 18 percent of U.S. workers believed the economy was getting stronger, while 47 percent felt it was weakening. The monthly employment report is based on data collected online from more than 250 workers in New York. The report measures job security, job transition and employee confidence. |
