Employer Sanctions Under HR 4437
Under current law, Employers are already required to verify a prospective employee s right to work. As part of that process, Employers are required to complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. However, under H.R.4437, an Employer will now be required to also verify the applicant s Social Security number through a data base to be established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). If the DHS data base indicates that the prospective employee is not eligible to work, that Employee can not be hired. That means that all workers must have a valid Social Security number that matches the United States Government s data base.
